The Portfolio Committee on Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs chaired by Hon. Aaron Motswana conducted oversight visit at Tlhakaneng Paving project in Ratlou Local Municipality. The oversight visit forms part of the oversight week programme of the Legislature in Ngaka Modiri Molema District aimed at strengthening oversight and public participation and promoting accountability and transparency in government.
The three-phased R8,1 million pavement project commenced in 2021 at the village situated near Kraaipan but experienced several delays and challenges including the appointed consultants and contractor. The Mayor of Ratlou Local Municipality, Councillor Matlhomola Jafta said the municipality has tried to engage both the contractor and consultant on finalising the project. “Some of the challenges included defects on the road and poor workmanship. We are currently on processes to ensure that we finish this project that will help the community of Tlhakaneng with a reliable access road,” said Cllr. Jafta.
Hon. Motswana said the municipality should engage its performance management unit to monitor the project. “The challenges emanated from lack of supervision, therefore we encourage the municipality to work on ensuring the project is completed. If there is consequence management, MPAC and relevant stakeholders should implement it,” said Hon. Motswana.
