The engagement formed part of the Legislature’s constitutional mandate of exercising oversight over the Executive and ensuring accountability in the use of public resources.
The meeting provided a platform for Members to interact directly with the Auditor-General’s Office on critical audit findings, challenges encountered by provincial departments, and proposed remedial measures. This interaction is aimed at strengthening the Legislature’s oversight role and ensuring that audit recommendations are effectively implemented.
During the session, the Auditor-General outlined the 2024/25 Provincial Government Audit Outcomes, highlighting key
findings, progress made, and areas requiring urgent attention.
The Head of Portfolio AGSA, Mr. Tlamelo Ramantsi confirmed that the Hon. Speaker and the North West Provincial Legislature have been doing a commendable job in attaining a clean audit. The AGSA also applauded the engagements of the Speakers’ Forum, noting that the forum plays a significant role in teaching compliance and sustaining clean audits across the institution.
“We commend the leadership of Hon. Speaker Dr. Desbo Mohono and the North West Provincial Legislature for their consistent efforts towards achieving and maintaining a clean audit. The Speakers’ Forum has proven to be an important platform for building capacity, enhancing compliance, and ensuring that institutions of government sustain good governance practices,” said Mr. Ramantsi.
Although the AGSA lamented a few departments that have fallen behind in complying with audit requirements, they applauded the Speaker and the Premier, Hon. Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi, for continuously supporting the audit processes by ensuring that all reports are submitted on time.
“While government departments are showing notable improvement, our local municipalities still need to level up in terms of auditing compliance. As the Legislature, we will continue to use the Speakers’ Forum as a platform to guide and capacitate municipal Speakers on what needs to be done to achieve clean audits and strengthen accountability,” said Hon. Speaker Dr. Mohono.
The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Collen Maine, and the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (SCOPA), Hon. Smuts Matshe, also formed part of the meeting. Their participation reaffirmed the Legislature’s commitment to strengthening financial accountability, transparency, and good governance across all provincial departments and entities.
