During the oversight visits, Members of the Provincial Legislature assesses the schools’ readiness programme for the 2025 academic year.

Amongst others issues, both schools are experiencing electricity challenges as there are constant power cuts and dilapidated infrastructure such as leaking roofing and lack of internet connections.

At Kudunkgwane Primary School, the Principal, Mr. Mathew Ramosidi said the school is paying exorbitant amounts for electricity due to the 3-phase electricity system. “We need a prepaid electricity system as we pay over R12 000 per month which include usage of printing machine and water borehole . Our internet was cut and the maths lab and electrical devices are not utilised for teaching and learning ,’ said Mr. Ramosidi.

Tasman Secondary School has several challenges which include dysfunctional ablution facilities, leaking and falling roofs and electricity power system that needs upgrading. The school does not have an administration block.

Hon. Maine said the legislature will engage the Department of Education for urgent intervention in both schools regarding the electricity challenges. ‘The MEC should intervene as the maths laboratory at Tasman is not working and affects teaching and learning. It is under utilised as the teachers informed us that internet connection was cut back in 2020 when the contract of the service provider was not renewed,’ said Hon. Maine.
